Karen Adams-Rischmann , a writer and teacher as well as our Spelling Bee word consultant, has written a poem especially for you! Out of the 281 words in this Bee Rap, at least 100 words come from Spelling Bee word lists from the last nine years (these words are in italics). And it even rhymes! Covid-19 Pandemic Bee Rap
Karen Adams-Rischmann
There’s no
apparent
abracadabra to
abolish or
alleviate it.
Don’t
believe the
balderdash that
bleach keeps you from
breathing it.
Camaraderie from the
couch per phone can
challenge creativity .
The rules might be
draconian but to
deviate is
dangerous even if you
disagree .
In
extraordinary times it’s quite
expedient to
encourage exercise .
Even if you’re
feverish , to
forfeit fabulous on-line
festivities would be unwise.
And be
grateful for
groceries and activities that do not
generate gloom ,
Or
heighten hysteria or
hasten huge heartbreaking happenstances in your mind’s room.
But stay
inquisitive and
imagine immense improvement and
inevitable inoculation
That will
justify the
journey past this
kerfuffle towards
laughter and useful
legislation .
Meanwhile in this
massive maelstrom of
myriad misnomers and fake
medications ,
Notwithstanding nausea and
nightmares , take
necessary steps to remain
neighborly
And
optimistic , even if the
occasionally overwhelming ordeal of home
office learning is like an
odyssey .
Patience and
perseverance are the
prescription :
penicillin didn’t pop up in a day.
The search for a
relevant remedy calls for
research with
responsibility
And,
similarly ,
superior ,
studious ,
scientific --not just
surface --
safety
To
transcend tremendous trepidation and
tolerate conditions which are
tumultuous ,
No matter how
uncomfortable , to find an
urgent ,
unique ,
unerring solution that’s
unanimous
Among
vigilant scientists with
veracity on the
verge of producing a
valuable vaccination --
For the
weird but not
quixotic quest to come out of this
quagmire , that’s the
qualification .
And to overcome
xenophobia about viruses that might be foreign, not your own,
Express a
yearning , through
zeal and learning, and maybe
Zoom , to rise above your
zone .
What is a spelling bee?
A spelling bee is a typical American spelling contest. The proper spelling of English words can sometimes be tricky — take on the challenge and take part in the contest!
Who can participate?
All kids born after July 30, 2003 who know or are learning English can sign up. This means you are 16 or younger throughout the 2019/2020 Baden-Württemberg school year.
How does it work?
Students first take a written test based on word lists previously provided. The top students in each group are invited to participate in the final contest where the words are spelled out loud in front of an enthusiastic audience.
Bee or E-Bee?
The students are divided into two groups:
Students who qualify for the Bee group may participate in the E-Bee group if they so desire. However, students who qualify for the E-Bee group may not participate in the Bee group. Students who primarily speak English at home but are taught in German are encouraged to sign up for the E-Bee group.
What do you need to do?
What is a Bee?
The word bee, as used in spelling bee, has nothing to do with insects. Historically it has been used to describe a gathering at which friends and neighbors join together for a single activity (sewing, quilting, barn raising, etc.) to help one another.
I am learning/use British English. Is this a problem?
No. Words used in the bee have the same spelling in American and British English.
What about pronunciation?
The contestants must use the correct American English pronunciation for the letters in the given words. For example, contestants may not mix up “g” and “j”, “i” and “e” or “c” and “z”.
